Integrating state and process variables to assess the carbon balance of China's terrestrial ecosystems from 2014 to 2023: the CarBalTE framework

Abstract:The carbon balance of terrestrial ecosystems (CarBalTE) reflects the dynamic interactions between carbon stocks, sequestration, and emissions in land systems, making it challenging to evaluate. This study proposes CarBalTE framework, which integrates state and process variables to quantify the magnitude, trajectory, and mechanisms of carbon balance in China's terrestrial ecosystems (2014–2023) and to evaluate ecological projects' contribu- tions. Results indicated that China’s terrestrial carbon stocks averaged 115.06 ± 0.48 Pg C, concentrated in Northeast and Southwest China, and were significantly correlated with sequestration (r = 0.88, p < 0.01), exhibiting an approximately one-year lagged effect. Furthermore, intensified human activities led to an annual increase in net carbon emissions (from 3.57 to 4.36 Pg C but decelerating after 2021, central-eastern provinces are particularly prominent) and the third-phase Yangtze River Shelterbelt Program (C = 0.65) proved the most effective project. The study reveal regional variations in terrestrial carbon balance and the impacts of human activities on ecosystems
